Young Fine Gael and Fine Gael LGBT have both welcomed the restoration of the Gender Recognition (Amendment Bill) 2017 and the Prohibition of Conversion Therapies Bill 2018 to the Order Paper of Seanad Éireann.
These bills had lapsed at the dissolution of both Houses of the Oireachtas earlier this year. They will both now resume at Committee Stage following yesterday’s restoration vote by Senators.
YFG’s Director of Engagement, Inclusion and Diversity, Emily Larkin said:
“The restoration of these two Bills is a much-welcome move in the fight for furthering LGBT equality in Ireland.
“Young Fine Gael previously campaigned for these measures to be introduced during our Pride Week Campaign in June. We’re delighted to see the continued progress of improving LGBT rights in Ireland.”
Chairperson of Fine Gael LGBT, Eoghan Howe added:
“Fine Gael LGBT is really delighted with the progress promised in the Programme for Government.
“We were relentless in our lobbying of the Fine Gael party to include a number of LGBT aims within the Programme. We are proud of Fine Gael’s record in championing equality for LGBT people in Ireland and the party’s commitment to equality for all Irish citizens”
