Time For RTÉ To Privatise 2FM – Young Fine Gael
In light of recent high-profile departures, YFG has reiterated their longstanding calls for the privatisation of 2FM.
YFG President Eoghan Gallagher said:
“RTÉ provides a vitally important service to the people of Ireland. However, recent scandals have highlighted that the organisation is bloated and unaccountable. With so many recent high profile departures from the station, it presents an opportune time to privatise what could be described as an unnecessary commercial aspect of RTÉ. What is needed is a slimmer RTÉ, focused on public service broadcasting.”
Gallagher, who is a local election candidate in Athenry-Oranmore, concluded:
“This alongside capping of ‘top-talent’ salaries, reform of the licence fee, and other measures, would pave the way to a very healthy media landscape in Ireland.”
Eoin O’Driscoll, YFG member & Fine Gael local election candidate in Dundrum said:
“In an era of widespread proliferation of disinformation, public service broadcasting is more important than ever. We need our national broadcaster to tighten its focus on its primary purpose as a public service broadcaster.
With recent scandals revealing crises in governance within RTÉ, a stripped back RTÉ could help rebuild public confidence in the organisation and help it better fulfill its hugely important role as a public service broadcaster.”
