About John Paul
I grew up in south Kilkenny and attended Good Counsel College in New Ross and Waterford Institute of Technology. I was elected to Kilkenny County Council on my first attempt in June 1999 and was elected to the Seanad in July 2002 – also on my first attempt.
In June 2007, I ran for the first time for Dail Eireann and needed just 200 more votes to secure a seat for the party. I also polled very well in the European election in June 2009.
I was appointed Spokesman on Finance in my first term in the Seanad from 2004 to 2007 and am currently the Seanad's Spokesman on Enterprise, Trade & Employment. I am a dedicated, committed community activist and part of a new generation with fresh ideas, energy, experience and drive to get this great country back to work.
Among my key priorities are: -
- Improved facilities for St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny
- Radiotherapy for the South-East Region
- Increased Funding for Special Needs Education
- A viable future for farm families
- Defence of the Kilkenny County Boundary
- Improved Road Safety Measures
- Greater Support for Carers and Increased Home-Help Funding
- Foster roll-out of broadband coverage to all areas
- Major national initiative to upskill workforce, with particular reference to those leaving the construction industry
- I am a playing member of the G.A.A. and local rugby clubs.
